Hugh Smithwick immigrated on the ship The Globe from London to Virginia on August 7, 1635.  The
Smithwick land in North Carolina was a prime location, bounded by the Albemarle Sound on the south, the
Edenton Bay on the west, and the Mattacomack Creek (or Queen Anne's Creek, now) on the north.

Edward Smithwick gave the land for St. Paul's Parish, Chowan Precinct,, 
the first church in North Carolina.  He was present at the organization 
of the church in 1701 and served on its vestry for many years.  His name
is inscribed on a marble plaque in the rear of the sanctuary in the present-day
St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Edenton, North Carolina.  He was also a surveyor
in 1682 and a juror and commissioner in local courts.  He was a
of the House of Burgesses in 1703, 1711, and 1712.
