| Edward Smithwick gave the land
for St. Paul's Parish, Chowan Precinct,, |
| the first church in North
Carolina. He was present at the organization |
| of the church in 1701 and
served on its vestry for many years. His name |
| is inscribed on a marble
plaque in the rear of the sanctuary in the present-day |
| St. Paul's Episcopal Church in
Edenton, North Carolina. He was also a surveyor |
| in 1682 and a juror and
commissioner in local courts. He was a |
| of the House of Burgesses in
1703, 1711, and 1712. |
