William Sheffield served in the 10th North Carolina Regiment, North Carolina Line, in Captain Hall's Company in 
1782-1783 during the American Revolution.  He first served in South Carolina and Georgia.  The State of Georgia 
granted him 575 acres of bounty land in Washington County, Georgia in March of 1784.  
William Sheffield moved to Burke County, Georgia from North Carolina after the 
Revolution.  He sold his bounty land to Robert Forsyth in 1788 and moved to Effingham
County.  The State of Georgia then granted him 400 acres on April 7, 1794.  In 1796 his 
part of Effingham County became Bulloch County.
